Motorcycle School - How to Pass a Driver's License Test
The completion of a motorcycle course will often mean that you don't requirement to pass the driver's test. The course will teach how to anticipate other drivers, keep the distance between them, and safely ride to your ability.
The course consists of instructor-led classroom sessions and hands-on riding. Make sure you are on time as stragglers can disrupt the class' schedule.
Classroom Instruction
If you're new to riding or just need to sharpen your skills, the MSF Basic Rider Course (BRC) is for you. This class provides classroom instruction and actual motorcycle/scooter operator training in a controlled off-street environment. The BRC is designed for beginner riders and can help you avoid MVC's road test. It teaches street strategies including how to brake efficiently, how to navigate in tight spaces, how you can move lanes, and how to avoid causing any dangers.
The five-hour ePackage I (eP1) can be taken as a standalone program or as an introduction to the BRC's hands on portion. The eCourse includes videos, interactive lessons and graphics that let you explore the mechanics of motorcycling. Insurance discounts may be available to you after successful completion of the course.
To be eligible for a course completion certificate and to participate in the riding-skill evaluation, the ePackage 1 (eP1) must be completed within 30 days of the BRC course's start date. If the eCourse cannot be completed and the course is not completed, no refund will be granted. To take part in the hands-on BRC participants must have a VALID driver's license.
The CLASS program, a 2-day rider-training course, allows you to improve your riding skills on a street-legal motorcycle or scooter provided by the school. The class is taught by MSF Certified Instructors and focuses on building your confidence, skills, and understanding of the motorcycle/scooter operating systems. The class includes instruction in the classroom as well as riding drills, and a rider skill assessment.
The course is based on the teachings of 3 time AMA Superbike Champ Reg Pridmore and his hand picked team of instructors. Their philosophy has been refined over 50 years of riding, racing and teaching. These concepts are presented in simple language so that they are easy to understand and implement. The result is an improved rider who is more confident, skilled and safer.
Practice Range
A significant part of your motorcycle school will be held on a practice range in which you can improve and test your riding abilities in a controlled environment. The site is usually closed to traffic, so you can practice safely. Your RiderCoach will walk you through the basics of controls and procedures of your bike before taking you out on the range. Your instructor will assess your abilities at the end of each session at the range. These exercises include limited-space maneuvers and brakes. If you successfully complete the riding-skills test you will be awarded a BRC Road Test Waiver Completion Card (a license waiver).
It is essential to bring your motorcycle safety gear to class -Your RiderCoach will provide helmets for students who don't have them, but you must be sure to wear a DOT-approved helmet. Wear long pants made of non-flare fabric, gloves with full-fingered fingers and ankle-high boots or shoes and eye protection.
You will spend approximately five hours in a class learning about your bike before you take it out on the track. After that the instructor will help you develop your riding skills by guiding you through straight-line riding shifting and turning as you progress to more complicated maneuvers, like emergency brakes and swerving. The course will conclude with a final assessment of your riding skills, after which you'll receive an award of completion and may qualify for a motorcycle insurance discount.
In several states, a motorcycle safety course is required to get a license. Contact your local DMV to see if an approved course or recommendation is required. Enroll in a Motorcycle Safety Foundation approved program. This can be used to waive the road test by the DMV.
The MSF Basic RiderCourse can be completed in a variety of locations across the United States. This course combines approximately 5 hours of instruction in the classroom and 10 hours on a bike. It is the fastest method to get a motorcycle licence and may also qualify you for insurance discounts.
Feedback from the Instructor
"The instructors were extremely professional and knowledgeable. They care about their students, and it shows. They will teach you the fundamentals you need to be aware of when riding a motorcycle. This class is highly recommended for every motorcyclist, no matter what age or experience.
The instruction in the classroom was informative and thought-provoking. The riding instruction was a combination of theory and practice, however the most memorable part was the instructor feedback. They didn't just say "OK" but instead explained what you did wrong. For instance, "You looked down at the handlebars", "You gave it too many gas", "Your wrists are bent", "You shifted too early", or "You weren’t pushing down on your foot peg". They then showed you how to fix the issue.
This kind of personal coaching is the price you pay for a high-quality training class and is the thing that sets this course apart from others. Some riders may consider this to be unnatural, but I believe it is essential to give students the best chance of passing the test and riding safely.

I've taken other courses in the past, and there was no individual feedback from the instructor. Unless a student is posing a clear danger or hindering the progress of other students in the class, t here 's no reason why instructors should be the sole decision-maker on whether or not the student has passed the course.
I believe that any moto school without personalized coaching is missing an essential component of their curriculum, and does not deserve the high marks they are awarded in student reviews. Beginning with the Basic RiderCourse then pursuing private lessons is the best way to get started and going quickly and safely. So you can learn from a pro, avoid bad habits, and begin your journey with confidence and a set of skills that will last for a lifetime of riding pleasure. Students who have completed the RiderCourse are exempt from taking the written and riding endorsement tests in a majority of states. Some insurance companies also offer discounts to riders who have completed an instructor-led course.
Final Exam
In the second half of the course you will be taught road skills such as brakes and accelerating, changing gears turning, swerving, and braking. This part of the class will last until you're able to pass a riding skills evaluation. This portion of the class will determine whether you will be issued a motorcycle license waiver card. The test will cover actions that the DMV driver examiner will be looking for during your license test. The exam can be difficult and if you don't pass it's not the end of the world. Keep working hard and do your best to pass next time.
If you pass the test your instructor will issue you a certificate of completion which can be used to get an insurance discount for motorcycles. You will also be a certified motorcycle rider and will be able to legally operate your bike on the streets.
The MSF 3-wheel BRC is a research-based and action-oriented program designed to teach novice 3-wheel motorcyclists of all ages physical and mental skills necessary for riding safely on the street. The 3-WBRC provides classroom instruction and two full days of "on 3WMC" instruction on motorcycles that are specifically designed for training purposes. Successful completion of this course allows you to get an NYS DMV road test waiver for operating only a 3-wheel motorcycle.
Students must wear a DOT approved motorcycle helmet and be at minimum 16 years old. Before beginning class parents or guardianship must sign the New York State Covid Release Waiver and indemnification form for students who are under 18. Eye protection and sturdy riding clothes are highly recommended. Helmets are available to borrow, or you can bring your own.
To get your motorcycle course completion certificate, you must complete the 5-hour ePackage 1 online course. The eCourse must be completed within 30 days of your course's start date. The online eCourse must be completed on a mobile device or computer. There is no refund if you enroll without having an active driver's license.
